New hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives for labels and packaging
Over recent decades, the line of hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives (abbreviated HMPSA) has established itself in the area of contact adhesives. These are thermoplastic adhesives based on thermoplastic synthetic rubbers with the ability to remain tacky. As complete systems, they provide an alternative to aqueous contact adhesive dispersions and solvent-based adhesives.
In addition, this product line has found a wide range of use in the labelling and packaging industry for permanent as well as removable adhesive applications. Increasing machine speeds require high-performance adhesives with precisely adapted properties. Planatol offers a wide range of hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives which it is continually expanding, including adhesives for the graphic arts and packaging industries.
Label adhesives
Planatol offers a range of effective, high performance HMPSA adhesives for the manufacture of self-adhesive labels. These adhesives meet all workability and adhesive property standards. All adhesives have comparatively low viscosity and provide trouble-free coating even at high machine speeds and, when necessary, can also be applied at lower temperatures to heat-sensitive materials, for instance.
Planatol PSA 1510, for instance, is an adhesive with extremely low bond strength while simultaneously providing excellent cohesion, making it useful for coating residue-free, removable labelling materials.
With VP 2924 PSA, Planatol has added a new label adhesive to its range of products that provides excellent bond strength and quick adhesion even on difficult surfaces. Just as important are its excellent die-cutting properties for trouble-free processing.
Planatol PSA 3331 is used for coating labels with particularly aggressive tack and very high degree of bond strength.
The range of label adhesives offered by Planatol includes a line of specialty products—from particularly photostable formulations to skin-friendly adhesives (tattoo manufacturing) or hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives for the high-speed labelling of PET bottles.
Packaging adhesives
The packaging industry in particular can no longer avoid the use of hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives, particularly when it comes to sealing paper and cardboard packaging. The adhesives are applied to one or both sides of tapes or applied directly to the packaging material.
Glued seals on cardboard boxes and mailing envelopes are exposed to extreme temperatures (summertime/wintertime) during everyday use. At the same time, strong retractive forces, which the adhesives have absorb, often affect the seals.
A line of Planatol packaging adhesives, such as Planatol PSA 3571, fulfil these requirements, since they provide strong bond strength while at the same time offering very good cohesion despite their relatively low viscosity. It is even possible to glue coated surfaces with low surface tension successfully. Another variant, Planatol PSA 3601, is a high-grade, thermally stable specialty adhesive used for manufacturing cardboard displays.
